Catherine Williams Smith was born on the 21st of December, 1819, in Truro, MA, to Samuel Hopkins Smith and Phebe Knowles. Her mother passed away when she was just one, presumably due to complications in the delivery of her brother, Samuel.
She married John L. Rich on the 5th of November, 1843, and they lived in Truro for a time before moving to Boston. As the family’s luck worsened, they moved to Charlestown, where John died of consumption in 1865.
Catherine died on March 5th (ironically), 1909, at the age of 89, from ‘paralysis’ complicated by ‘exhaustion’, which perhaps suggests stroke. Her death was reported by a ‘Miss Rich’, who could have been a grand-daughter, or perhaps Matilda, if she didn’t marry.
Catherine is buried in Truro near John.
